Mars is often referred to as the "Red Planet" due to its reddish appearance. The planet is named after the Roman god of war, who was also known as Ares in Greek mythology.
Mars is a rocky planet and roughly half the
size of the earth. It’s diverse surface features, including large volcanoes
like Olympus Mons (the tallest volcano in the solar system) and a vast canyon
system known as Valles Mariners.
A day on
Mars, known as a "sol" is approximately 24.6 hours long. Mars takes
about 687 Earth days to complete one orbit around the Sun, defining its year.
Mars has
two small moons, Phobos and Deimos. These irregularly shaped moons are thought
to be captured asteroids.
Exploring Mars: Numerous
missions have been sent to Mars for exploration. Notable missions include the
Mars Rovers (Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and
the recent Perseverance Rover. Scientists
are exploring the possibility that Mars may have had conditions suitable for
life in its distant past.
Mission Mangalyaan: "Mangalyaan" refers to the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India's first interplanetary mission to Mars. Launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Mangalyaan aimed to explore Mars and demonstrate India's technological capabilities in deep space missions.
Mangalyaan's
success drew international attention and recognition for ISRO's capabilities in
space exploration. The mission provided valuable data for scientific research
and paved the way for future deep space exploration missions by India.
Education
on planets is essential for advancing our understanding of the universe, fostering
technological innovation, addressing environmental challenges, exploring the
potential for extraterrestrial life, and inspiring future generations of
scientists and explorers.
