In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) redefined the criteria for classifying planets, leading to Pluto's reclassification as a "dwarf planet." According to the IAU definition, a celestial body must orbit the Sun, be spherical in shape, and clear its orbit of other debris to be considered a planet.
